Outdoor battery storage systems for solar PV
An outdoor battery storage system keeps photovoltaic energy storage outside the occupied areas of a home, office or production building. WodaTherm™ BDTN systems combine battery modules, battery management and an IP54 outdoor enclosure with heating and cooling. Depending on the selected configuration, they work with a low-voltage or high-voltage inverter or PCS. The result can be an independent energy unit positioned beside a plant room, garage, outbuilding, fence line, commercial yard or a suitable PV connection point.
When outdoor battery storage makes sense
Outdoor installation is not automatically the best answer for every site. It becomes valuable where it solves a real design, access or space constraint:
the battery remains outside living rooms and indoor plant areas;
if a battery fire occurs, it is not located inside the house because the storage system is installed outdoors;
valuable indoor floor and wall space stays available;
a basement, garage or utility room does not need to be rebuilt solely to accommodate the battery;
the system location can be planned independently of the main building layout;
service work can take place without entering a home or interrupting normal business areas;
emergency responders can approach the equipment directly from outside;
fans and other operating noise remain outside occupied rooms;
heat rejected by the cooling system is not released into the building interior;
a heavy cabinet can stand on a purpose-designed external foundation;
delivery, positioning and replacement can be planned for pallet equipment or a crane;
a modular site plan can allow future cabinets to be added when the electrical design supports expansion;
the system can be located near a suitable PV, inverter, PCS or distribution connection point;
where the selected configuration allows it, the battery, inverter or PCS and controls can form one independent outdoor energy unit;
the equipment can serve workshops, sheds, garages and agricultural outbuildings;
it suits commercial, farming and light-industrial sites without spare indoor plant space;
it can support an outdoor EV-charging hub or a local energy node;
it can be used for a microgrid, islanded system, remote load or separate building;
anchoring, locks, fencing, lighting and CCTV can be incorporated into the site security plan;
active heating and cooling help keep the battery within its permitted temperature range throughout the year.
An outdoor enclosure still requires a proper site design
IP54 limits dust ingress and protects against splashing water within the scope of the relevant test; it does not mean that a cabinet can be flooded or submerged. The project must address foundation capacity, drainage, clearances, vehicle-impact protection, cable routes, earthing, electrical protection, service space and airflow. The correct location also depends on the climate, nearby windows and doors, escape routes, access control and the building arrangement.
Capacity and inverter compatibility
The range includes 51.2 V low-voltage storage and high-voltage cabinets from 51.2 to 241.2 kWh. Before ordering, the inverter or PCS operating-voltage window, BMS communication protocol, charge and discharge power, protection, cable size and length, and the required control strategy must be checked. Nominal capacity alone is not enough: the right system is selected from measured PV production, the load profile, available grid capacity, backup requirements and expected cycling.
Each WodaTherm™ BDTN configuration is supplied as project equipment. The delivery includes the documentation package stated for that configuration, including CE, UN38.3 and MSDS documentation. To start a compatibility check, send us the inverter model, required capacity, proposed location and expected outdoor temperature range.
