Preliminary information indicates that the share continued to grow in 2024 and 2025. The IEA describes the concentration as unprecedented: no other energy technology has previously occupied such a dominant part of energy patent activity.

The number does not mean that every patented idea is ready for a home, business or industrial installation. Patents measure inventive activity, not field reliability, certification, compatibility or commercial support. They do show why battery specifications and product generations are changing so quickly.

Innovation reaches more than the cells

Much attention goes to chemistry, but a stationary battery is a system. Cell format and chemistry affect voltage, thermal behaviour and ageing. The battery-management system measures cells and enforces safe limits. Active or passive balancing changes how the pack manages differences between cells. Contactors, fuses, enclosure, thermal design and communications determine how the stored energy can be used in practice.

Firmware and inverter protocols are equally important. Two products may both advertise CAN or RS485 and still require different messages, settings or approved firmware versions. A buyer therefore needs confirmation for the exact battery, BMS and inverter combination rather than a generic statement that a communication port exists.

Fast progress increases the value of documentation

When product generations change quickly, model-specific documentation protects both the installer and the customer. Dimensions and weight influence transport and structural planning. Continuous current determines usable power. Peak current must include duration and test conditions. Operating temperature, ingress protection and clearances affect where the unit may be installed.

Certification documents should identify the model family they cover. Warranty terms should describe operating limits, throughput or cycle assumptions and the party responsible for support. A long headline warranty is less useful when its technical conditions are missing.

What buyers can use from the innovation wave

The rapid growth of LFP has already improved stationary-storage choice. Sodium-ion, solid-state designs and other approaches may broaden the market further, but a new chemistry alone does not guarantee a better installation. The useful question is whether a technology solves a measured requirement with acceptable safety, lifetime, serviceability and total cost.

Expansion is another design decision. A modular system can make later capacity additions possible, but mixing cell ages, firmware or pack generations may be restricted. The maximum number of parallel units, required communication topology and current sharing should be checked before the first purchase.

A disciplined way to compare changing products

Identify the exact model and hardware generation.

Compare usable energy and continuous power, not only nominal capacity.

Confirm inverter protocol and firmware compatibility in writing.

Review certificates, warranty conditions and installation manuals.

Verify total packed weight and delivery requirements.

Plan expansion limits before choosing the initial configuration.

Innovation gives the market better options, but it also makes vague product pages more dangerous. WodaTherm therefore keeps technical documents locally, separates complete batteries from DIY enclosures and records logistics for the precise model offered. A patent may point toward the future; a saleable system still needs verifiable details today.

Put the article into practice

Compare model-specific specifications, availability and delivery information without leaving WodaTherm™.

Explore battery storage Explore thermal storage

Primary source: International Energy Agency — The State of Energy Innovation 2026 · source language: English · published: 2026-01-01.
